Sumy city was found by settlers, who were trying to escape the oppression of Rech Pospolitaya (Poland). The city was found in 1654.

There is a legend, that there were found three bags on the bank of the river Psyol. It was an occasion to give to the city the name of Sumy. The word “Sumy” in Ukrainian means “bags”. This legend is reflected on the emblem of our city.

In the 17th century, the vast majority of city dwellers were Cossacks as far as there was a Cossacks regiment in the city. To a great regret of contemporary Sumy ladies, the correlation between genders changed a lot. For the time being, there are two women per one man.

Nowadays, it is difficult to accept the fact, that our city was a fortress with 4 towers and gate, with 23 deaf towers and underground entrance leading out of the city to Psyol River. The present day, Sumy is a small green city with the views to the Psyol River.
